Shropshire Cycling Clubs Association’s 2016 prize winners were cheered on by a good turnout of over 80 supporters at Ellerdine Village Hall. Club runs converged from all points of the County thanks to a glorious Autumn morning for a well-received social and early lunch before trophies and medals were handed out. SCCA Chair Helen Tudor announced the winners, with stalwart timekeeper Gill Morrison handing over the trophies to recipients.

Biggest winner was Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Jenny York, taking home a superb haul of five trophies including the Ladies Best All Rounder and the Veteran’s Championship Shield – the only female to ever win this award. York’s team mate Victor Chetta also got in on the action with Guest of Honour Freda Ash stepping up to present The Cliff Ash Best All Rounder Trophy, named in recognition of husband Cliff, the first winner from the early 1970’s and an SCCA founding member. This Trophy reads like a who’s who of the best time triallists in the County, with Chetta winning it by a narrow 1 minute 25 seconds after a  season-long battle with Matt Davies. Davies didn’t go home empty-handed though after capturing the Shropshire Championship Shield, The Gordon Davies 10 Mile Championship Trophy and The 50 Mile Championship Trophy too.

One of the best received season-long competitions was the Coaching Revolutions 2-Up Series, with Hafren CC members Bryn Davies and Pete Thomas dominating, gaining a maximum possible 100 points to take the Overall Trophies. But the Series also produced Mixed Pair Trophy wins for Wrekinsport’s Delwyn Jones and Amanda Witty; and taking a well-deserved win of the brand new Ladies Trophies after a fine season where they just got faster and faster were Nova Raiders’ Jenny Newton and Jane Chapman.

There were two further team trophies on offer with Rhino Velo overcoming the adversity of losing a team member within 200 yards in the 4-Up Championship to put their name on The John Farr Shield for the first time. And for the second year running Mid Shropshire Wheelers captured The Top Club Award.
