Paramount CRT “Five Chimneys” Hill Climb

A classic Shropshire Hill Climb got it’s first outing in many years as Paramount CRT promoted their inaugural event on the “Five Chimneys” climb at Hughley in Round 6 of The Coaching Revolutions Hill Climb Series – with Ian Coe making it a double by not only winning overall but taking the Veteran’s win too. Coe stopped the watch on 4 minutes 8.32 seconds for a victory of over 14 seconds from Ian Coupland – and sealed Veteran’s Gold with a maximum 100 points.

This tough, unrelenting climb averages 8% and takes its name from a row of 19th century cottages demolished in the 1960’s, showing just how long this hill has been utilised competitively. However, it wasn’t known to Coe, with the Hafren CC member riding over from Wales especially to gain it’s measure. He explained: “Thankfully I’ve been over there twice in recent weeks to reconnoitre the course, which paid off. I hadn’t got a clue how to ride it until the morning to be honest. A long unrelenting climb, I stuck to my freshly formed plan and was very pleased with the result. I hope to see a few more competing at the final two events “.

When told he had won Veteran’s Gold an elated Coe added: “I’m obviously delighted with Gold and joining team mate Rebecca Richardson in making it two Gold’s for Hafren CC. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the Series, it’s a great addition to the calendar. Well done to all riders especially Ian Coupland and Stuart Proctor for pushing me so hard, and thanks to all the organisers“. Coe lies just two points off the overall Bronze medal position too and will be out to improve his points tally in the final two rounds.

Coupland has been pushing hard the Hafren rider hard, finishing in 4:26.42 and had the advantage of knowing the climb well, but even this wasn’t enough to beat Coe. The Mid Shropshire Wheeler lies in the runner-up spot in the Veteran’s Series with a strong tally of 86 points, with the 18 points added for taking runner-up on the day stretching his advantage over Stuart Proctor. Coupland revealed: “I’ve rode this climb regularly in training and its hellish every time! Thanks to Paramount and the timekeepers, and well done to Ian Coe who smashed it“.

Proctor meanwhile was still recovering from a through soaking in Round 16 of the SB Sports Injuries Series the previous afternoon, but despite this was just 0.35 seconds off surprising Coupland thanks to a fine 4:27.17 effort. The Paramount CRT rider was still pleased with his ride however despite lamenting the numbers of riders willing to take on the challenge of this vicious hill, stating: “It was a pity about the numbers, but for our first Hill Climb it probably made it more manageable! A tough climb, legs, I was still feeling it from yesterday’s time trial. I’m happy with third behind the two Ian’s though – well done both“!
