Background

Last year Hafren CC was invited to visit a cycling festival organised in the town of Les Herbiers in France by the Newtown/ Les Herbiers twinning committee. As a result an invitation was extended to Hafren CC to put forward names to participate in the various time trial categories in the 2017 event. These are high quality time trials with high quality fields. Details of the courses and the results for last year are available on the website for the event listed above.

For example, the Women’s, Espoir and Elite category rode a 20km 870m course. The winning time was 28min 55s and the slowest time was 36 min 53s with a middle ranking time of 31min 32s. For the men’s elite, the course was 51km, 530m. The winning time was 1 hour 4 minutes 8s and the slowest time was 1hour 33 min 49s with a middle ranking time of 1 hour 10 min 15s. The courses are undulating, technical and far from flat. There are also Espoir, Junior and Cadet/tte categories. Ages for these categories are Cadets/Cadettes 15-16, Juniors 17-18, Espoir Under 23. Course details are on the website

The club’s intention is to invite first claim members to express an interest in participating.  There is no guarantee of a place but it may be possible to secure a small number of places in each category. If you wish to be considered please write a short letter to Steve Taylor Club Chair which sets out how your cycling record/experience and TT times would enable you to represent the club in an event of this quality.  Clearly a history of high level performance is a requirement.

If the club receives expressions of interest and is able to secure places, it would then choose representatives on the basis of the expressions of interest and discuss the logistics of attending the event.

As this opportunity has come through Newtown Twinning Association, accommodation for competitors and family would be available as part of the twinning arrangement. Don’t worry if you have no French, the Twinning Committee and your French hosts will be there to help

There are also sportives run on the day before the TT. If we get riders into the event, it is likely that the club will look to organize entries into the sportives in conjunction with the Twinning Committee. Cycling is big in the Vendee, and Les Herbiers is keen to use their world renowned event (the last UCI TT on the calendar before the World Championships)

Expressions of interest should be emailed to the Chair steve@ukictltd.com by April 17, 2017

Allons-y!
