Wrekinsport CC Gordon Davies 19

It was mightily close between the top two in Round 11 of the SB Sports Injuries Series with a single second ensuring the victory for Matt Gibbons in Wrekinsport’s Gordon Davies 19. Held over two laps of the lumpy Shawbirch – Cotwall Bank circuit, Gibbons just edged out Series leader Bryn Davies with a fine effort of 42 minutes 39 seconds. That effort moved Gibbons up to 4th in the Overall standings and shows his improving form as the Nova Raider made this his first victory in this Series. A delighted Gibbons commented: “My pacing was good and I finished strong, which was the smallest difference in a good night’s racing. Good conditions and a tough course, but thanks to Wrekinsport“.

Davies also took the runner-up spot in the Veterans competition too with an excellent +7:48, and despite being pushed out on the night tightened his grip on both the Overall and Veterans Series, stretching his lead in the former to a giant 82 points and to 60 points in the latter. He stated: “It was a very close Top 3. My first time on the course, I enjoyed it, though went out a little to cautiously on the first lap. I pushed hard on the second, but needed to push more on the first one. Well done to Matt, a great ride, and thanks to Wrekinsport and all involved for a great night’s racing“.

Pushing Davies out in the Veterans event was Stuart Proctor with a fine +8:25, with the Revolutions Racing rider also capturing third Overall in 42:56. Proctor knows this circuit well, and revealed he was using it as training for the Shropshire Championship 10: “I was using it for pacing practise for the big ride, and I think I nailed it. I felt great the whole way round, I didn’t suffer from cramp, and I smashed a new Personal Best – what’s not to like! Thanks all at Wrekinsport for hosting, becoming a bit of a favourite course now! Super close for the Top two, chapeau guys“!

The Top two in the Ladies Series went head-to-head with Pauline Hughes taking the win in 49:10 pushing Jenny Newton into the runner-up spot in 51:18 to stretch her Ladies Series lead by two points. Hughes wasn’t finished there either claiming 3rd spot in the Veterans on +6:58 30 seconds ahead of Nova Raider Scott Harris. She commented: “It was my first time on this course and really enjoyed it. Thank you to all timekeepers & marshals, especially those at the bridge! A top night by Wrekinsport, a lovely atmosphere“.

Making an entry into the Junior Series Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Henri Bedford tried his hand at his longest ever time trial with a little persuasion – and loved it. The 13 year-old put in a great effort of 51:51 to debut in the Junior table at 5th spot, and seems ready for more, stating: “Having only ridden 10 mile Time Trials before I was a little nervous when I was encouraged to sign up for the 19. I like to challenge myself, and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to do so encouraged by members of Wrekin Sport Cycling Club. Crossing the line in 51:51 I was incredibly proud of my first attempt and can’t wait to have another chance at riding it to see if I can improve my PB now set. For the time being, I am going to be concentrating on the 10 mile distance having recently qualified for the Nationals again this year. Last year I qualified and finished 4th overall, having only competed in one 10 mile Time Trial event. I would like to say a very big thank you for all the encouragement and support from everyone at Wrekin Sport Cycling Club“.

Wrekinsport riders were competing for The Gordon Davies Trophy, awarded on handicap. When that handicap was applied Daniel Smith came out on top of the pile with an adjusted 39:26. He was delighted to be informed of his win, stating: “Superb! I really enjoyed it“. Meanwhile it was a close call for Silver and Bronze with Kieran Cooksey’s 40:04 just beating Tomas Hales by three seconds.
