SCCA Autumn 10 No.1 A first time entrant made an immediate impact in Round 15 of the SB Sports Injuries Series as Matt Davies took a win by a huge margin of exactly two minutes. Davies battled through a northerly headwind to surprise himself with his late season form in the first SCCA Autumn 10 on the Waters Upton – Hodnet course, stopping the watch on 20 minutes 18 seconds. This excellent ride showed Davies he still had his edge, with the Rhino Velo rider commenting: “The ride went well. I worked hard on the way out, and pretty much limped back from the roundabout hoping the wind would push me to the finish line. I’m really happy with the result and wasn’t expecting the result to be close to the 20 minute marker, especially on the Waters Upton course that I never seem to get right. Thanks to all those organising, marshalling and timekeeping“.
But it was a closer call for the runner-up spot as SCCA Private Member Alex Leek took the place by 10 seconds from Gary Duncan as he put in some fine-tuning for the upcoming Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 10. Leek crossed the line in 22:18 and revealed: “I’m happy with second place in a strong field, and a course personal best. Hopefully I can do as well next week in the Championship 10“.
Paramount CRT member Duncan was watching his back with Scott Harris just nine seconds off his 22:28 effort, with Duncan not only taking third overall but finishing Veteran’s runner-up with +4:31, again ahead of Nova Raiders’ Harris 45 seconds back. Duncan was pleased with his effort stating: “It was a tough day, I paced it well which gave me a 10 power personal best, so I’ve got to be happy with that. It’s great to have some end-of-season 10’s on our doorstep“.
But Duncan didn’t have the beating of 72 year-old Terry Icke, who put in a commanding ride of +5:57 to take the Veteran’s win after finishing 8th overall in a fine 23:29. The Newport Shropshire CC rider has proved to be the man to beat in the Veterans standings since moving back to Shropshire mid-season and will definitely be one to watch in the 2017 season as he revealed there was more to come stating: “The race day had great weather, it is a good course to assess fitness. However it was a hard day, I felt OK but am still missing that top end speed, but enjoyed the race“.
But that wasn’t all the action in the Veteran’s standings as Andy Rose sealed the final medal in this Championship with his 6th placed +3:05 good enough to put him in an unassailable position with two rounds to go. Rose wasn’t finished there either as he lifted himself into the Bronze medal position overall with his 23:31 ride, but with things much tighter in this Championship it could go down to the wire. Rose commented: “I’m very pleased with securing the Veterans Bronze, the field this year has been very strong. I would especially like to thank all the volunteers“.
Meanwhile in the Ladies Series Emma Robinson tightened her grip on the Silver medal after taking the win in 26:44, 16 seconds ahead of Helen Tudor who elevated herself into the Bronze medal position on the strength of her ride. Robinson has her eye firmly on that potential Silver based on her post-race comments: “I enjoyed the race, it was nice to be racing again after a few weeks off. It was quite hard in places with the headwind, but the tail wind helped on the way back. Hoping to keep it going for the next two races“!
In the Junior Series it was another first timer in the SB Series who made the impact with 12 year-old Jack Young putting in a fine effort of 28:01. Young had ridden the course earlier in 2016 in the GHS Regional Championship and took a good chunk off that effort. He stated: “It worked out quite well for me. A headwind on the way out, but with a slight downhill I pushed hard on the way back with a tailwind. I knocked 43 seconds off my last time on that course. It was awesome! I’m very happy“.
