Shropshire Cycling Clubs Association Autumn 10 No.3

The SB Sports Injuries Series reached it’s conclusion with six medals to be resolved in the third SCCA Autumn 10 at Waters Upton – though new Veteran Victor Chetta had a point to prove to himself first. Chetta has found motivation difficult at times this season but came back with a bang. The Mid Shropshire Wheeler not only took the Overall Round 16 victory, he unusually topped the Veteran’s standing as well in his first race in that category.

Chetta put in a dominant performance to stop the watch on 21 minutes 44 seconds, 48 seconds ahead of Round 15 winner Tim Beardmore, whilst in the Veteran’s his +4:15 beat North Shropshire Wheelers’ David Wilson by seven seconds. Looking happy post-race he stated: “I felt strong, I’ve rediscovered my zest for racing and training in the last few months“.

Beardmore meanwhile put in a superb effort of 22:32 putting in a shift to capture Overall SB Series Bronze in the process. But the Nova Raider wasn’t finished there, recording a +3:51 Veteran’s Standard to take third in the race and do enough to capture Bronze in that competition too despite after doing enough to beat Pauline Hughes by just four points. Beardmore has ended the season strongly, and was delighted with his form, commenting: “My fastest time on the Waters Upton course this year so really happy. A strong ride by Victor for the win. I’m delighted to wrap up Bronze in the Veterans and Overall. Big thanks to my team mates for their support, in what’s been a super-strong season for the Nova Raiders; and thanks as ever to organisers, time keepers and marshals. It’s been a great seasons racing“.

Whilst Beardmore has been getting stronger team mate Scott Harris has been worried about his end-of-season form fading after doing just enough to capture Veteran’s Silver in Round 15. Harris had to keep things together for one final race to double his quota and add Overall Silver to his tally, with his fourth place 23:06 ensuring that medal. His comments post-race revealed however he was ready to put his feet up for a while: “I’m pleased with my season, loads of personal bests – it helps having great team mates. However I’ve been underperforming on the last three races, I need a bit of time off then back to it ready for next season“.

Harris was pushed out of Overall third place on the day by Pete Thomas, with the Hafren CC rider just dipping below the 23 minute mark with 22:58 – despite a mid-race scare. Thomas finished his season strongly but was lucky not to come to grief as he revealed: “A broken handlebar, a personal best and 3rd place – I’ll take that! Thanks to all involved“.Sandwiched between Chetta and Beardmore in the Veteran’s North Shropshire Wheelers’ David Wilson was another rider posting a personal best and ending his season strongly. Wilson’s 26:15 converted to +4:08 on Veteran’s Standard giving him that runner-up spot. He stated: “I felt OK and did a personal best for this course – a nice way to finish the season. Thank you marshals and all the other people that have marshalled all year at races“.

All three medals were in play in the SB Junior Series with five young riders in competition. Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Ben Pierce took a maiden win on the day with a fine effort of 23:59, though after entering the Series late finished agonisingly just two points off the medal positions. He stated: “A good result considering the hard conditions“. Pierce’s team mate Jack Young knew that his dominant lead in the Junior Series would be sealed just for finishing, with the 13 year-old stopping the watch on 26 minutes exactly to take Gold after finishing third on the day. The delighted youngster revealed this had been one of his targets for the year: “I am very pleased. I set out to get Gold this year but wasn’t sure if I could. Thank you to marshals and timekeepers“.

Henri Bedford was another latecomer to the Series but thanks to a chain of solid results took Junior Silver thanks to his 25:16 ride, which gained the day’s runner-up spot. The 14 year-old stated: “I’m delighted to finish second after competing in the later stage of the Series, and very well done to Jack. A big thank you to all the marshals and officials who have given their time to make the races happen“.

Despite Pierce’s efforts the final Bronze medal went to Sam Morris, who could not be caught on the day. Morris was happy to take Bronze and was impressed by the new riders providing extra competition, commenting: “It’s great to end the season with another medal, though a shame I couldn’t make the last few of the series with the Cross season starting. Great to see some more Juniors time trialling and doing so well“!

The SB Women’s Series had been all wrapped up in Round 15, but that didn’t stop some competition between the medallists who were all present. Despite Pauline Hughes having an eye on Veteran’s Bronze Jenny Newton took a maiden win with a fine effort of 25:52, 23 seconds ahead of Hughes. She stated: “I pushed extra hard and it paid off. I’m thrilled with the win. A great season, thanks to all those involved“.
