SCCA Autumn 10 No.3

Bryn Davies ended the season in the manner he started it with what Donald Trump would perhaps describe as a ‘bigly’ performance in the final round of the SB Sports Injuries Series. Series champion Davies put in a fabulous effort of 21 minutes 51 seconds to win the third SCCA Autumn 10 by a big margin of 29 seconds over Stuart Proctor – an excellent effort on the uneven Waters Upton – Hodnet surface at any time, but especially so at the close of the season.

But Davies wasn’t finished there as he also took the win in the Veteran’s Series too, again from Proctor in +4:22 – but this time by a single second. The delighted Hafren CC rider commented: “I was really pleased to finish off the season with a strong result. Thanks to all at SCCA, marshals timekeepers and all for a great seasons racing – looking forward to next year already“!

Paramount CRT’s Proctor meanwhile seems to have been getting stronger at the tail-end of the season, and despite only getting into time trialling over the final four rounds has scored so consistently he has managed to creep into both the overall and the Veteran’s Top 10 after putting in strong rides. His 22:20 was a solitary second off his personal best, showing his improvement. He commented: “What a fabulous afternoon and so lucky to miss the following storm. I was a little sad to miss out on my PB by a second, but hey! I felt great out there, such perfect conditions. Well done Bryn, and thanks to everyone for the making the Series possible. I’ve massively enjoyed getting into the Time Trialling scene over the last couple of months, and really looking forward to next year“!

The event commenced with the destination of four medals still up for grabs, with Nova Raiders’ Andy Rose in prime position to add overall Bronze to the Veteran’s Bronze he won in the penultimate 16th round. Rose had spent the week determined to beat 23 minutes for the first time as he eyed that prize – but things nearly started disastrously with a rubbing wheel proving obstinately unfixable every time he put the power down. Eventually sorting the issue just in time, Rose had the advantage of a ding-dong battle with Revolutions’ Racing’s Steve Elcocks in the charge for the finish line, with the two riders finishing side-by-side and Rose having achieved his goal with a fine 22:54 for fourth spot overall, 24 seconds behind North Shropshire Wheelers’ Richard Kay. The 14 points earned took that Bronze, with a delighted Rose stating: “I’ve really enjoyed the season, many thanks to all the volunteers. I find it difficult to believe that I ended up with two Bronzes in a competition with so many fast riders. I’m pleased to finish the season with a Waters Upton course Personal Best“.

A final medal was up for grabs in the Ladies’ Series too, with Oswestry Paragon’s Helen Tudor and Nova Raiders’ Jane Chapman both in the running. SCCA Chair Tudor put in a great effort of 26:49 to beat Chapman on the day by 28 seconds with Chapman’s team mate Jenny Newton third in 27:36. This win earned Bronze, with Tudor knowing pre-race that she had to put in a performance, commenting: “I was pleased with my ride. I knew I would have to try hard to beat Jane and Jenny. My best ever power for a 10, so a good way to end the year. Thanks to all involved, and to Ellerdine Village Hall for making us so welcome“.

Meanwhile two medals were in play in the Junior Series with the bright sunshine bring three young riders out to compete. Surprise package of the day was 13 year-old Ben Pierce, who put in a superb effort of 24:40 to not only win the Juniors category on the day but finish 6th placed overall from a good field of 23 riders. This is the Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ first appearance in the SB Series and he lamented not joining in earlier in his comments: “I enjoyed both the great conditions and getting a good time, but wish I’d done the previous time trails“!

Despite Pierce taking the win on the day 12 year-old Jack Young did enough to capture Junior Silver in his first season with a fine effort of 28:16. The ever-smiling youngster was thrilled to take that medal, stating: “It’s been great fun, I wasn’t expecting a Silver, I’m very, very happy“! With another first-timer, George Coombes taking third on the day in 29:17 no other rider could overtake Kieran Morris’ points tally and as a result the Mid Shropshire Wheeler took the final available medal, Junior Bronze.
