R7 Friction & Hydraulics TT Series 6th June.

The Event

It was Hafren CC’s turn to host a round of the Friction and Hydraulics TT on Wednesday and it was quite an event.

Word has finally spread that the D25/24R course is fast and safe and the field was almost oversubscribed with 57 entries and a maximum of 60 allowed.

Weather plays it part in Time Trials, and although cool weather and wet roads often produce fast times, there is nothing as much fun as racing in sunshine, so a glorious sunny evening with the temperature still 22º at the start and a light wind from the North East the event was set for fast times and enjoyable racing.

The route takes in seven traffic islands (as most are crossed twice) and this takes some marshalling. As an Open event the Timekeeping requirements, start sheets, risk assessments, sign on, results, safety signs, headquarters and post-race refreshments, car parking (to name some of the requirements) all take a great deal more organizing than for club events. There was the added pressure that the Club’s Open Event Organizer for the past three years, Chris Taylor, had to pull out at short notice two weeks before the event for personal reasons. The requests for volunteers, both before the event to take over the on the day running and for “boots on the ground” volunteers to make the event run smoothly and ensure the safety of riders, officials and the general public was superb. A great response from a great club and much appreciated and commented on by the 40 non Hafren rides on the day. With a team of over 20 volunteers and Oswestry Paragon taking charge of the Four crosses Island, MSW providing the Timekeeper (thanks Dave York) and Helen Tudor helping with the intricacies of the CTT pre-race requirements, there was over 30 people working on this event. A tremendous response, from the buzz on the night the volunteers seemed to have as much fun as the riders. Thanks for all who rode to all who made this happen.

Thanks

Thanks all the competitors who entered the event and congratulations to all the prize winners.Thank you to Friction and Hydraulic Services for their support of the SCCA (Find out more).
Many thanks to all the timekeepers, catering team and marshals without whom it would not have been possible to run the event, and for the donations to Severn Hospice.

Don’t forget you have another chance to ride this course in the SCCA 25 on 28/06.

Full Results

Such a well-run event was then topped with Hafren taking Fastest Team award with Bryn Davies, Ian Nesbitt and Tyler Brennan posting an impressive aggregate time of 2:47:33 for the 25 mile (40km) course and Sam Holwill toping the Juniors with an impressive 01:01:40 in his first ever 25. It was a fast night with 21 rides posting sub 60 minute times.

SCCA Race Report and Results

(By Dave Fletcher SCCA)

The fastest 25 mile course in the area saw some mightily impressive competition with three-eighths of the field beating the hour in Round 7 of the Friction Hydraulics Series, the second time Hafren CC has hosted an Open 25. Matt Garthwaite finished on top of the pile in a superb 52 minutes 51 seconds on his first visit to the Berriew-Four Crosses course to push Bryn Davies out by 2:01 – but it didn’t come easily. The SCCA Private Member explained: “This was my first 25 in two years and now I remember why! Regardless if it’s a fast course or not it’s still just as hard. I was satisfied with the result, but hoped to push out a bit more. I was relieved to get a slight bit of wind assistance on the return leg. Great marshalling“!

Garthwaite charged up the Overall standings to equal fifth spot having won all three of the events he has entered in the Friction Series, and drew admiration from Davies, who beat Series leader Matt Gibbons into third by just four seconds with a fine 54:52.

Davies put local knowledge gained from Hafren CC club events to good use to eek out that narrow advantage, stating: “I was pleased with the position as Matt is in a different league, but was hoping to be closer. I was over a minute down on last time, possibly a bit taken out of the legs at the weekend. I felt that I paced it well, but possibly held a bit to much back going out. Proud to be wearing the club colours as they put on such a great event and know how much effort they put in to make it a success – great work Hafren CC“.

Davies took the win in the Friction Veterans Series with a fine +11:59, 57 seconds ahead of Oswestry Paragon CC’s Gary Duncan. Davies narrowed the gap at the top of this Series with team mate Ian Nisbett finishing 4th on the night in both the Veterans and Overall with his +10:49 and 56:14 actual moving him into the lead of the Veteran’s Series and up to second in the Overall Series behind Gibbons.

Nova Raiders’ Gibbons suffered in the defence of his Series lead, stopping the watch on 54:56 and his comments point to where the missing four seconds to Davies were lost: “It looked good conditions for a fast night but I just couldn’t get a rhythm going especially on outward leg and it all felt scrappy, although I was pleased with my time. Hafren CC put on another good event with some close racing“.

In the Women’s Series Charlotte Chapman continues an impressive run of form, posting an excellent sub-hour ride to finish 12th Overall. The Nova raider was delighted with her 59:40 effort, pushing out team mate Deb Hutson-Lumb who finished in 1:03:18. Hutson-Lumb took the consolation of third place in the Veterans with +10:51 and moved into the Top 10 in this competition as a result. Chapman commented: “My first 25 of the year. It felt awesome to go under the hour for the first time in the District. A fast course, but it had some surprising drags! Very impressed with the marshalling – managed to stop even me from going the wrong way“!

Two young riders made a big impact in the Friction Junior Series with both attempting the distance for the first time ever. Hafren CC’s Sam Holwill took the win by 47 seconds from Henri Bedford (MSW) with a fabulous 1:01:40, showing huge potential. Holwill was thrilled with his ride and hinted at more to come: “My first ever 25 mile time trial so I was pleased with result. I think I can go faster next time as I held back on the way out and had plenty left for last couple of miles. I really enjoyed it as the weather was almost perfect and the wind was not as strong as in my last few time trials“.
