Race of TruthOn a night when it seemed the correct choice of sporting equipment was a canoe, the heroes of the night were the Marshalls and Time Keepers. Andy Palin. Emma Serjeant, Sam Holwill, Mike Holwill and Phil Paul marshalling with Tony Brooks manning the time pieces and Phil Paul keeping the excellent electronic finish line data. It was wet, and riding in it felt a lot easier than standing around in the gloom keeping riders safe. Andy Palin deserves double thanks, the excellent cakes he provided were much appreciated at the end (proceeds to Severn Hospice)

The torrential rain that fell in the hour before the start eased off after the first few riders started, although the water up from the roads was such that it was hard to tell if it was raining or not. Maybe it just slicked up the roads and although a glacial surface suggested road islands were taken with some caution, fast times were posted across the field on this unfamiliar course. Ian Nisbett’s  57:15 was very impressive and fast enough for first. Pete Thomas was close behind on 57:25 with Dilwyn Griffiths rounding out the podium with a fine 59:34, the only other rider to get under the hour.

It was a tough night hanging around in heavy rain before the start, and it was hard for riders to get their warm ups completed, but everyone seemed to enjoy a tough night’s racing and this course was a welcome addition to the series. Don’t forget that there is an Open TT on this course on 30th June, entries close on the 18th so get signed up (it might be dry!)
