Newtown 12.5 mile Time Trial Result – 27th May

Held under grey skies and with the constant threat of rain, 26 riders took on this 12.5 loop that starts off on Milford Rd on the outskirts of Newtown, heading through Llanwnog and then returning to Newtown via Caersws and the main A489.

A strong headwind was felt by everyone on the outward leg to Llanwnog and it was here that the race was won or lost, depending on how well you were able to cope with the gusty conditions. The tail wind on the return leg was a pleasant relief to all competitors with speeds in excess of 35 mph being achieved by many.

Peter Thomas was knocked off top spot in this weeks event when his 30 minute 56 second ride was bettered by Ian Coe by just 5 seconds. Less than a minute covered the top 5 positions as the competition for 2015 Time Trial honours really hots up. Third placed on the night Graham Harris posted 31 minutes 28 seconds, closely followed by Medwyn Jones (31:34) and Bryn Davies (31:47).

In the Ladies competition Rebecca Cook rode for the first time this season and posted a very creditable 35 minutes 30 seconds to beat many of her male rivals, 2014 Champion Jackie Harris came in second in 38 mins 44 secs with Sahrah Wilding rounding out the podium in 40 mins 13 secs.

Thanks to all marshals and helpers, whose support and commitment continue to make Hafren Cycling events some of the best organised locally.

The next Hafren CC event is the ‘Open’ 10, this is a pre-entry only event, so please don’t turn up on the night expecting to get a ride, as entries officially closed last weekend.

The next club time trial series event will be on 10th June on the new Forden / Caerhowel / Montgomery circuit.

Sign-on is at Forden Community Centre from 6:15pm – 6:45pm, with the first rider off at 7:00pm.
