Matt Davies took a fine win in the Bridgnorth CC Hilly 21 on the lumpy Bridgnorth – Much Wenlock – Shipton – Morville circuit with his great effort putting him into the lead in the Friction and Hydraulic Services Shropshire Championship Points Series. The Rhino Velo rider showed huge consistency in Round 2 of the series to better his 2015 ride by just 10 seconds in a time of 49 minutes 48 seconds. Davies had determination written large over his face on the tough climb past Walton Grange as he fought through the pain for a win of nearly two and a half minute, demonstrating the quality of his effort. He was however glad to see the inside of the HQ situated right on the finish line, commenting: “It was nice to get my first win for Rhino Velo. As ever the middle third was a brute, but I’m happy with the ride and chuffed to bits with the win. Great flap jacks by Bridgnorth CC afterwards“!

 

Davies’ nearest challenger was 2015 Best All Rounder Victor Chetta who despite being ill slashed nearly two minutes off his 2015 effort to show he will be one to watch when fully fit. The Mid Shropshire Wheeler crossed the line in 52:14 to ensure his team scored big in their defence of the Top Club Award which they are putting up a stoic defence of. He stated: “My legs were definitely weakened from the bad cold I’ve had for two weeks now, so I was relieved to still get a high placing“! Chetta saw off a fine challenge by North Shropshire Wheeler Richard Kay, just 43 seconds back in third, with early signs looking like this will be a classic confrontation as the season progresses.

 

But if that race was close it didn’t compare with the Ladies Championship, with team mates Amanda Whitmore and Pauline Hughes split by just six seconds. Reigning Ladies Champion Whitmore looks to have her work cut out thanks to Pauline Hughes breathing down her neck despite stopping the watch in 1:04:21. And with Parmount’s Ceris Eslava just 30 seconds off that winning pace and looking to be getting faster Whitmore was cautious in her comments stating: “A tough course! Well done to all the Ladies, looks like the season might be a tight one“.

 

Ludlow Brewery rider Steve Minton opened up a narrow 10 point lead in the Veteran’s Championship thanks to being one of only three riders to record a Veteran’s ‘plus’ on this gruelling course. Having finished 4th overall in 53:13 his age-adjusted standard of +3:01 saw off Kay by 35 seconds, with Bridgnorth CC’s Tim Beardmore third in +1:09. Minton was pleased with his ride commenting: “Another toughie! It was very hard on the leg to Much Wenlock, but I found a rhythm after that. Building well“.

 

With just one Junior tackling the course Sam Morris rode away from the field after starting in first place with an excellent effort of 55:24 – good enough for 7th place overall. Morris’ light weight was a distinct advantage on rolling circuit, helping him to take an early lead of 50 points in the Junior Championship.
