Off to a flying start!

Wednesday night saw the Hafren Cycling Club’s Time Trial Series get underway for the 2013 season with its first event being held in Welshpool. With £1 from every rider in this first event going to the Welsh Air Ambulance, it was great to such a strong field, with 39 riders taking on the 10 mile course. In addition to the usual big hitters from the 2012 series, it was great to see 17 new riders take to the start line for their first ever HCC time trial. And the conditions were perfect for some quick times!

After being edged out of top spot in the overall standings last year by Medwyn Jones, Max Gethin was looking for a strong start to the season to go one better this time around. And so it proved, with Max stopping the clock first on the night in a time of 22:44. This was over 90 seconds quicker than he finished the same course last season, taking the overall lead from Medwyn by 37 seconds. Tomos Owens took the overall 3rd spot, and with it the first junior place, in a time of 24:08. The next 3 places went to Kamil Studzinski, Graham Harris and Carl Spencer, all finishing within 14 seconds of each other!

Whilst there were many standout performances on the night by newbie TT-ers, Morgan Hill took 16th overall and second in the junior section in a time of 26:21, with Jacqui Loxam taking the win in the ladies race in a time of 33:23. For full results, click here

To help boost the charity pot, riders were greeted at the finish line with homemade flapjacks (for a small donation) which pushed the donations raised on the night to over £50

With such a strong start to the season, next week’s 12.5 mile time trial on the 8th May in Newtown is now eagerly awaited. For details, click here.
