Round 1 – Welsh Cyclo Cross League

Three Hafren boys made the trek down to Cwmbran to fly the red and white flag on the season opener, in three different age categories.

An interesting and challenging course was laid on by the promoting club Cardiff JIF at Llantarnam High School. Essentially the course was fast with technical sections through the wooded areas to navigate, complete with uphill run sections hence the name “Calf Burner”.

First up was Max Bufton in the u8’s race, Max was raring to go and in a confident mood from his previous outing. Off went Max with his now trade mark crouched riding style and made light work of the course … passing riders on the hill each and every lap and finished with a very creditable 9th place, well done Max.

Next was the turn of Paul Bufton and Nick Huband in the senior and veterans race’s respectively. A large field was present with 113 on the start grid, for this the first race of the official welsh league and as a result and an attempt to thin the field the organisers threw an extra loop into the mix for FUN!!!

Paul rode strong within his race having a good old battle with some familiar faces of old. On the other hand Nick seemed to be having his own private battle with a thorn bush.

All three riders enjoyed the days racing and are looking forward to their next outing, which is Hereford on the 6th October.
