The weather Gods were not smiling on the Newport Shropshire CC 10 with riders enduring cold rain throughout in Round 7 of the Friction Hydraulics Series – not that that stopped a number of big personal bests. Matt Davies once again proved he is the rider to beat after taking the win in 20 minutes and 10 seconds despite a strong challenge from team mate Kirk Vickers on the Hodnet by-pass and overcoming a scare due to conditions. He explained: “I had a good ride, but I found the roundabouts a little scary in the wet and the wheels were starting to fall off towards the end. A great course and massive result for Rhino Velo Racing with Kirk having a storming ride! An excellent cake selection too“.

Davies opened up his Series lead to a huge 170 point margin on the strength of this top ride, but it wasn’t for lack of trying that Vickers nearly caused an upset after storming home to a new personal best 20:18. A delighted Vickers was ecstatic with his performance, commenting: “A new PB! I paced it perfectly, 8 seconds behind Matt can’t be bad! Very pleased with my performance“. Taking home the lion’s share of the Top Club Award points Rhino Velo extended their lead in this contest to 80 points over reigning champions Mid Shropshire Wheelers.

But Vickers wasn’t the only rider helping himself to a personal best in tricky conditions as Bryn Davies took third with a fine effort of 21:20, outpacing North Shropshire Wheelers’ Richard Kay by 20 seconds in what is developing into a friendly rivalry. Davies moved into the overall Top 10 thanks to this effort despite this only being his second event in the Series and stated: “I was pleased with the result. I pushed a bit hard on the way out but a personal best at that distance – I’m so happy with that. Thanks to Newport CC and all involved“.

Both these riders are making an impact in the Veterans’ Series with Davies finishing second on the day in +4:53 and Kay, who leads this Series, equal third with Tim Beardmore in +4:24. But there is seemingly no stopping 72 year-old Terry Icke, newly returned to Shropshire and doing the promoting club proud with a superb +6:44 to take the Veteran’s victory. The worrying thing for other riders is that Icke feels he is yet to achieve top form, as he explained: “My form is moving in the right direction, though I’m still about 20 watts down. Having just moved to the area I’m now getting in some quality miles, so hoping to get faster soon“! He continued: “What a pity we cant control the weather, a wet afternoon and a very well run event – I think everyone enjoyed it“.

In the juniors it was a two-way battle between Mid Shropshire Wheelers Devon Round and Revolutions Racing’s Sam Morris, with Round putting in a fabulous effort to capture fifth overall with 21:42 to Morris’ 22:31. Round suffered for his efforts in the headwind that afflicted the return leg to Hopton Chapel as he explained: “I felt good, but paid for my early efforts once I hit the headwind. However I’m pleased to get the Junior win and 5th overall“.

In the Ladies event it was a dead heat for first between Jenny York and Pauline Hughes, with both ending the afternoon on 25:19. Hughes leads the Ladies Series and is on excellent form, so York knew she had to put in a ride to challenge. She stated: “With Pauline’s current good form I knew I’d got to push hard. I am very pleased with the result“. Hughes meanwhile was pleased at the good level of female competition adding: “What a great Ladies competition! Well done ladies – brilliant times. I enjoyed the race, but it was tough on the way back in“.
