A new course with a sting to many didn’t stop a familiar winning streak for Bryn Davies as Hafren CC went one better with a fabulous 1-2 in the Oswestry Paragon CC Hilly 19. Round 9 of The SB Sports Injuries Series saw riders tackle the tough climb to Welsh Frankton from both sides in an extension to the normal Oswestry club 10 course taking in Queen’s Head – Gobowen – Ellesmere. Davies was one of many riders gaining their first experience of this course, with a tailwind helping riders on the climb to Ellesmere. Davies stopped the watch in 44 minutes 55 seconds to stretch his lead at the top of the SB Series, and stated afterwards: “It was my first go on the course. It was a tough but enjoyable ride. Great conditions, and good to see another Hafren rider at the top“.

Davies’ comment referred to Ian Nisbett, who surprised himself with a narrow runner-up spot in a fine 45:29. This pushed Tim Beardmore, the rider who lies second in the overall standings out by just nine seconds. Nisbett was a little taken aback by his fine performance on a course that suited him. He commented: “It was the first time I have ridden that course and it was certainly a challenge. I struggled a little with the rough road surfaces and had a few minor traffic hold ups; but overall was pleased with my time, and quite surprised to only be around 30 seconds behind Bryn as he is flying at the moment. A big thanks to all the marshals and timekeepers“.

Beardmore’s 45:38 effort just claimed that third spot on the night from Nova Raiders’ Scott Harris by eight seconds as the Bridgnorth CC rider looks determined to cement his overall runner-up spot. He was also trying it out for the first time, commenting: “My first time on that course – tough but very enjoyable. I was pleased with my ride despite being held up in traffic a bit. A big thanks to marshals and support from the public in Whittington! A lovely evening for racing“.

Davies also extended his lead in the Veteran’s Championship too despite Marches CC’s Paddy Crisp taking the win in +5:33. Davies stretched his lead in the Veterans to 38 points over Beardmore with a +5:15 effort, with Beardmore tying for 4th spot on the night with Nisbett on +4:50, with Harris sandwiched in between on +5:00.

In the Ladies Championship Series leader Tracey Billington saw her lead narrowed to 48 points after Pauline Hughes took the win in 52:26, with Oswestry’s Helen Tudor  coming closest in 55:32. The Revolutions Racing rider enjoyed her evening, stating: “My first time on this course – the climb was tough both ways! Great support from spectators, I enjoyed the challenge of a different course“.

But if many of the leading riders were experiencing the course for the first time that wasn’t that case for Junior winner Kieran Morris, who put local knowledge to good use to push out Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ team mate James Bell by just 11 seconds. Morris stopped the watch on 47:34 to claim a strong sixth place overall and revealed: “I was pleased to get the win after hard week of training. It is a local course for me, I use the brow most weeks for efforts. A huge thanks to marshals and organisers – next stop the SCCA 25 Championship“!
