Wednesday 8th May saw the Hafren cycling club’s Time Trial series head over to Newtown for its second race of the year. The 12.5 mile route started on Milford road and headed out through Aberhafesp to Llanwnog before returning down the main road from Cearsws to Newtown. The route is well known to many of the local riders and some quick times were expected. The one thing which is never the same however is the weather conditions and it was a tail of two halves. Whilst there was a strong head wind on the rolling road out to Llanwnog, riders were assisted on the return to the finish in Newtown with a friendly tail wind.  30 riders of all abilities took to the start line to put themselves up against the clock and set their marker for the rest of the season.

Despite many new riders on the night, it was the familiar face of Medwyn Jones who took the win in a blistering time of 30.56. In fact the top 4 riders were all around a minute off each other with Graham Harris taking a strong second place in a time of 31.50. Steve Owen, saving himself for the Ruthin triathlon where he came 7th overall (1st in age group), took the third spot in a time of 32.50. Rob Fisher continued his good start to the season taking 4th spot, just breaking the 34 minute barrier by a single second.

There was a strong chasing pack with the next 11 riders all within 2 minutes of each other as the series really starts to hot up. The next race heads back over to Welshpool on the 15th May.
