It was medals all round in the first County Championship of the season – although many riders thought organiser Mick Ward was most deserving of a medal after a litany of issues almost saw the SB Sports Injuries Shropshire Championship 50 presented by Mid Shropshire Wheelers cancelled. With road works affecting both the A41 and the reserve A49 courses some furious rearrangement saw Round 6 of the Friction Hydraulics Series run over four laps of the Prees – Tilstock – Quina Brook circuit. The race saw visiting Team Bottrill rider John Dewey break the County 50 mile record, set in 2011 by Andy Bason, by 1:28 with a fabulous ride of 1 hour 44 minutes 46 seconds – and Rhino Velo rider Matt Davies grabbing the County 50 mile Gold.

Davies stretched his lead at the top of the Friction Hydraulics Series with a great effort of 1:51:25 around the technical circuit to successfully retain the 50 mile Trophy. Unfamiliar with the circuit, Davies nevertheless put the hammer down to win Gold by 45 seconds. He was generous in his post-race comments stating: “Mick deserves a medal with all the organising and re-organising he had to do, and a credit to him, the marshals and the time keepers for making it all happen. The race went well, I didn’t quite know how to pace it but thrilled with the result and a fairly sporting course too. Hats off to John Dewey as his time was sensational“.

Taking Silver was Shropshire CCA rider Dave Griffiths who set a personal best 1:52:10 at the distance on a course that suited his road racing style. The effort told on the Oswestry-based rider who entered his first time trial for some time. He explained: “I was pleased with a Personal Best considering I haven’t been on the time trial bike for nearly a year – I’m struggling to walk now! A great course and great cakes at the end“.

Taking 50 mile Bronze in 1:55:16 was Victor Chetta who was found the change of course to something out of the normal to his liking. He stated: “I really enjoyed that course, fun sweeping bends and good for spectators too. It made a pleasant change from dragging up the A41! Great fun, thanks to hard work of organisers“!

Chetta had double reason to celebrate after leading his Mid Shropshire Wheelers squad to Team Gold in a combined 6:05:57 thanks to solid support from Craig Ball and Andy Hazell, with both featuring in the Top 10 as Ball captured 7th place in 2:03:48 and Hazell 9th in 2:06.53. A delighted Ball commented: “My first 50 ever – ouch! A great course and really enjoyable with the team win as well.  Great to see some quality riders visiting Shropshire – well done John“.

Chetta wasn’t the only one taking home two medals as Hazell won Veteran’s Gold by a big margin and captured The Jim Heath Trophy. Hazell’s +25:25 was over five minutes ahead of the nearest competition, and he was pleased the race was run stating: “A big thanks to Mick Ward, the marshals and all volunteers – no race without them! It’s great to have the Veteran’s win“.

Hazell’s nearest competition came from an unexpected quarter as Terry Icke captured Veteran’s Silver in +19:37 after just returning to the area following many years absence. Newly signed to Newport Shropshire CC Icke is probably best known as a leading member of the now defunct Dawley Velo in the 1960’s. He said: “It was my first time trial this year. I missed a couple of months training so I’m still a bit rusty around the edges! I enjoyed the technical course used, it was a well organised event“.

There was another surprise winner of Veteran’s Bronze as Andy Tamplin showed his mettle with an excellent +14:17, with his actual time of 2:01:18 capturing 4th spot overall. Tamplin’s results have been getting better and better as the season has progressed and he elevated himself to third in the overall standings and 5th in the Veteran’s table on the strength of this ride. Tamplin was full of praise for the beleaguered organiser stating: “I’d just like to thank the organisers, and particularly Mick Ward for keeping this race going. I had a little trouble as my visor steamed up on lap two which wasn’t to good at all! It’s really good to catch up with all the other Shropshire TT’ers“!

In the Ladies Championship Tamplin’s Revolutions Racing team mate Pauline Hughes is going from strength to strength. Taking her third Ladies win on the trot Hughes has powered to a 115 point lead and was delighted to take Ladies Gold in 2:22:38 in her first ever 50. She commented: “I was pleased with my time, first 50 time trial for me, and delighted to win. I really enjoyed the course – a big thanks to Mick Ward & Mid Shropshire Wheelers. There was great encouragement from spectators and riders around the course – thanks everyone“!

Hughes saw off a strong challenge from Paramount CRT rider Ceris Eslava who was just 57 seconds back. Another first-time 50 miler, Eslava was thrilled to capture Ladies Silver and was generous in her comments stating: “My first 50 mile time trial so I was pleased with my result. Well done to all the other ladies, and big thanks to the organisers especially Mick – it turned out to be a great course“!

The reigning Ladies Champion Amanda Whitmore meanwhile is having a quiet season and was pleased to get amongst the medals thanks to a 2:23:53 effort – just 18 seconds behind Eslava. Whitmore commented: “After deciding to take the season off and just ride the odd race I’m delighted to pick up Bronze, a real surprise“.
