12 Bryn DaviesThere was double cause from celebration for Hafren CC rider Bryn Davies as he not only stretched his lead in the SB Sports Injuries Series but also did the same in the Veterans Series too. Davies battled through miserable conditions in round 5, Wrekinsport CC’s Hanna  Phipps-Jones 18 to take that win – but only just. Stopping the watch on 39 minutes 44 seconds Davies just beat off a strong challenge from Nova Raiders’ Luke Pollard in a lap of Eyton – Hodnet – a victory of just five seconds. Davies commented: “I was pleased with that. I felt good  and was glad to get going to stay warm!. It was close at the top with Luke only a few seconds off. Another great round, thanks to Wrekinsport CC for hosting.”

Pollard was fresh back from participating in a number of European triathlons and sportives with the fitness gained in those events showing as he was the only other rider to beat the 40 minute mark with a fine 39:49. This was Pollard’s first entry into the Series of 2016 but he clearly showed his potential despite the filthy conditions. His post-race comments were tongue-in-cheek as he stated: “It was good to start racing time trials in the British summer – oh no wait! Close times, maybe next time“!

Davies’ time when converted to a Veterans’ Standard of +7:44 gave him a bigger winning gap in this competition of +1:09 over Bridgnorth CC’s Tim Beardmore, who finished third on actual in 41:11. Beardmore has been creeping up the rankings steadily after a good start to the season, and on the strength of this ride lifted himself into both Overall and Veteran’s runner-up spot in the Series. He commented: “As you would expect it started to rain as soon as I got on the bike, but at least it wasn’t cold. I was really happy with my time, the legs felt great on a course that obviously suited me. Hoping to keep improving my personal bests as the season progresses and we’ll see where I end up“.

It was a three-way battle in the Juniors with Revolutions Racing rider Sam Morris making it a maximum four wins from the four rounds he has entered to stretch his commanding lead to 44 points at a very early stage of the competition. Morris’ effort of 44:34 was good enough to 10th place overall from a field of 31 – though it didn’t come without a few issues. He explained: “It was a tough day with the rain! However my seat post slipped early on, so I was surprised to have held on for 10th“.

In the Ladies 14 year-old Hollie Owens overtook two of her challengers to finish in 46:21. The Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ second claimer caught first rider off Emma Robinson in sight of the finish line, with Robinson taking the maximum 20 points on offer for affiliated riders with a 49:25 effort. That was good enough to elevate her back to the top of the Ladies’ standings by just two points from Wrekinsport CC club mate Tracey Billington who was leading the Ladies’ Series after four rounds.
