Records tumbled and World Champions turned out in The Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 4-Up, the most hotly anticipated event on the SCCA calendar – despite teams having to battle against mechanical issues and a roaring gale. This rarely seen format saw the Rhino Velo RT squad of Matt Davies, Kirk Vickers, Matt Garthwaite and Stuart Glover determined to capture both event and course record on a tough 50 kilometre course between Waters Upton and Prees – but a disastrous start made those goals all the harder.

Having had a test run three days earlier with no issues and posting an ominously prescient time they knew just what was required, but didn’t bargain for the mechanical issue that ended Stuart Glover’s race after just 200 metres. Forced to continue with the minimum three riders required to register a time Davies, Vickers and Garthwaite dug deep to blaze around the course in 1 hour 3 minutes 40 seconds to set that course record – and shave 1:27 off Paramount CRT’s event record from 2012 to take The John Farr Trophy.

Glover was full of praise for his team mates, stating: “A great showing in very hard conditions, bearing in mind it was ridden mostly by three riders as I had a mechanical within 200 meters from of the start line. Great event and well organised and nice to have a big name and team entered too“. Garthwaite elucidated on that early loss adding: “We remained composed and stuck to the plan after losing our fourth man 200 metres in which made a hard race harder. Chuffed with the victory and the records“.

Meanwhile it was all too familiar for Kirk Vickers as despite a club change for 2016 he made it three Championships on the trot. Vickers was well versed in the format having led Mid Shropshire Wheelers to victory in 2014 and 2015, but this race was undoubtedly the hardest as he explained: “A very hard day with the crosswinds, even harder losing one rider due to a mechanical. There was great support out there, I’m pleased with capturing the all time event record and course record“.

Vickers eluded to a big feature of this event, the huge number of spectators who roared the teams on around the course, and that was something picked up by Matt Davies too as he added: “A great event with lots of support from the marshals, competitors and at road side, so thank you to all those involved and well done to all of those that raced. We had a good ride although a mechanical within 200 metres wasn’t great. Matt and Kirk dug in for a great result, even if we were all a little ‘second hand’ by halfway let alone the finish. A brilliant event again, ‘Shropshire’s Olympic Pursuit‘”.

Davies’ last comment showed that victory was by no means assured with the highlight of the County calendar ramped up a notch with the presence of Ladies professional outfit Podium Ambition, led by Olympian and Paralympian Dame Sarah Storey, holder of 72 world records and 27-time World Champion. With a strong international flavour in a squad featuring Ireland’s Lauren Creamer, Australia’s Nicole Moerig and Britain’s Claire Rose they shattered the Ladies event record and set a fabulous Ladies course record with a brilliant ride of 1:07:46. This held the  lead for nearly an hour, with just Rhino Velo managing to grab victory late on, with Podium Ambition finishing runners-up three seconds ahead of a strong Preston CC squad who are regular visitors to this event.

Dame Sarah Storey was overwhelmed with the enthusiasm of competitors who took the opportunity to chat to and have photos taken with an Olympic Champion. She explained the team’s surprise entry and spoke of that welcome: “Our team was looking for some TTT events as part of our training towards what we hope will be a ride at the Team Time Trial World Championships, and this 4-Up was perfect. We didn’t expect we’d receive such a warm welcome and have the chance to chat to so many other competitors. It was a really fun event to be a part of and a brilliant way to test out a new line up. The windy conditions added to the challenge so we were delighted to average 44.5kph and learn a lot for the next opportunity. Thank you to everyone who made the event work, the marshals were fantastic!”

The fabulous time was all the better considering the team had been racing in a major Championship the day before, with Creamer revealing: “After racing at the RTTC National 25 Mile Championships it was great to put on another good show as a team today, setting a new Ladies course record and breaking the Ladies event record too! We rode together smoothly and were extremely grateful of the opportunity to race as a team in practice for the World TTT Championships in Qatar later in the year if we qualify. On behalf of the team I would like to thank the organisers and marshals for the time spent on the event and looking after us out on the course. Well done to all teams, including Rhino Velo for the win”

Rose was still getting over winning Bronze in those Championships and added: “It was a great race and fantastic to see so many ladies teams participating as well. As a team we were really pleased with our ride given the strength of the wind and that three of us had ridden the National 25 the day before”

Rose’s comments showed just how popular this event has become with Ladies squads, with four all female squads amongst 28 team entries as well as females in other teams. Amongst the County squads the Paramount CRT team of Jemma Southall, Helena Amos, Louise Woodvine and Rhiannon Jones took the plaudits with a fine 1:31:43 effort to push out Nova Raiders Ladies by 41 seconds, with both Paramount and Nova entering six squads each.
