A big field and some good competition meant a tough afternoon at Waters Upton in Round 9 of the Friction and Hydraulic Services Series, with SCCA Private Member George Evans coping best with a headwind and the infamous Peplow ‘pave’. Evans charged around the simple out and back course in the Mid Shropshire Wheelers 10; which incorporated the George Herbert Stancer Regional Championship for schoolboys and girls, stopping the watch on 20 minutes 39 seconds. This elevated the Team Bottrill rider into the overall Top 10 standings for the first time this season. He stated: “It was a tough day with good competition. I knew it would be close but I was really pleased with the result“!

With two team mates out due to illness the expected challenge for team honours didn’t materialise from Rhino Velo, who ceded the lead in the Top Club Award to Mid Shropshire Wheelers thanks to three riders making the Top 10 and strength in depth throughout the field. This left Matt Garthwaite running damage limitation by taking the runner-up spot in 21:12. Garthwaite commented: “I was happy to take runner-up spot after the team result failed to materialise“.

Leading that charge for Mid Shropshire Wheelers was Victor Chetta, who finished third overall just 20 seconds behind Garthwaite with backup from Devon Round, fourth in 22:02, and Craig Ball, equal fifth in 22:22. Chetta elevated himself to second in the overall standings on the strength of this fine ride, and was pleased with his efforts stating: “It was a nice warm afternoon for it with a welcome tailwind on the return leg. It was good to battle against the pain barrier in a shorter, more intense event“.

Meanwhile Round not only finished 4th overall, he also took the win in a strong Junior competition with 13 youngsters taking the line. Round closed the gap at the head of the Junior Championship to Sam Morris, who tied for runner-up with namesake Kieran Morris in 23:28.

In the Veteran’s Championship there was a clear win for Terry Icke, newly returned to Shropshire and putting in fine performances at every turn. Icke was 10th overall on actual in 23:21, but when converted to Veteran’s Standard he came out on top of the pile in +6:05, despite problems with the Peplow road surface. He commented: “It was a good day for time trialling, the sun was really warm. I was pleased with my ride, my fastest time on that course with power up. The road surface was not too good in places but it was the same for everybody. A top class field with some very good times posted“.

Icke’s closest competition in the Veteran’s came from reigning Veteran’s Champion Andy Hazell, ending the afternoon on +4:11. Hazell was generous in his post-race comments stating: “It was a great ride by Terry on that course, I was well pleased to get runner-up“.

If competition had been good in the Juniors it was red hot in the Ladies with Jenny York snipping away at the Ladies Championship lead of Pauline Hughes. York put in a solid afternoon’s effort to finish in 25:35 and push Hughes into the runner-up spot by 23 seconds, as the Mid Shropshire Wheeler also took third in the Veterans with +4:03. York knew she had been in a race, stating: “Pauline is certainly making me work hard this season! I was really chuffed with a win on that course, a great competition with a good field of ladies again“. Hughes still holds a 95 point lead at the top of the table and relished the challenge, adding: “I found it tough! Well done to Jenny, I knew she would be pushing hard“.
