The course record was smashed in Round 13 of the SB Sports Injuries Series as Josh Williams showed a two month lay-off hadn’t dulled his speed. Williams knocked a massive 2 minutes 8 seconds off Andy Bason’s 2010 benchmark, charging around two laps of the rolling Westbury – Bicton Heath – Halfway House circuit in the Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ 30 in a fabulous time of 1:04:39, coping well with the tough climb of Windmill Hill twice.

SCCA Private Member Williams, making his debut in the Series had been making a low-key return after that break due to feeling jaded, but made many riders sit up and take notice with this searing time. He explained: “I have taken nine weeks off the bike in total. I jumped back on my bike last week and found the enjoyment in it all again. I’m happy to just be riding again, and whatever I do in the races I am competing in are a bonus. Thanks to Mid Shropshire Wheelers for the event, shame the numbers were not very high as its such a good course“.

Runner-Up Bryn Davies wasn’t too far off Bason’s old record either, with the Series leader content with second place with a great effort of 1:07:13. When converted to Veteran’s standard Davies took the win in +13:12, extending his lead in both main and Veteran’s Series – though he was mindful of mistakenly missing a couple of events, commenting: “I would have stretched my lead a bit more if I hadn’t missed last week! I enjoyed the course, My time at that distance and course. I was pleased with the result, my legs went in the last five miles but I hung on for a good result. No touching Josh who put in a cracking time“!

Davies wasn’t the only rider feeling the difference between the rarely run 30 mile distance and the standard 25 either, with Tim Beardmore also caught out by the extra five miles. Occupying the runner-up spot both overall and in the Veteran’s, The Bridgnorth CC rider stopped the watch on 1:10:06, converting to a Veteran’s standard of +10:33. He explained: “It felt a fast day on a fast course. I was happy with my time, although my power was a little down. The tank was empty with five miles to go. Great ride by Bryn to take the Veteran’s win, I was nowhere near him. Big thanks to Dave and Jenny York and all at Mid Shropshire Wheelers“.
