Ian and George Coe decided last minute to enter the ‘ M in M’ as the Cheshire Cat which many of the club had trained hard for was postponed due to the snow.

On arrival it was clear the bitter East wind had diminished though not that warm we decided shorts were the attire for the day (a good decision it proved)

The event as always was to the usual high standard expected from Kilotogo. All routes very well marked etc.

From the outset it was clear that George had ambitions of an impressive time. Hanging on to him for the 1st 20 miles we were almost 20mph average however as we began the accent of Cannock Chase the Rocket increased to full thrust . I soon realised I probably wouldn’t see George again until the finish line. Out over Cannock and on to Newport the Shropshire/Staffordshire hills rolled by . From Atcham (near Shrewsbury) we rose towards and around the Wrekin and over to a tourist filled Ironbridge.

A couple of short sharp climbs one of 15%and we were heading toward the finish. The gentle rolling hills were now starting to feel like the hills of Mid-Wales due to fatigue and a slightly stronger breeze. I knew I had a chance of a very good time but my computer had become faulty since breaking a spoke on the 15% climb. All that was function now was the cadence and all the timers had reset to zero.

I got into a small group of tired riders about 20 miles from the end. We finally entered a more built up area which made my now weary body sit up and suddenly I realised I had a mile or so to go . The pedals began to turn much easier the gradients were just gentle rises and I was home. George was by the car as I freewheeled the descent to the finish line.

Not knowing how I had done I was thrilled when given my ticket indicating Gold standard , I honestly didn’t think I’d be capable . George had been back more than 10 minutes and found it as grueling as the rest of us but averaged 18 plus mph.

A great ride followed by a free massage and a hot shower, and of course cheeseburgers chocolate and lots of fizzy drinks.
