The destination of seven medals was decided in the 17th and penultimate round of the Friction Hydraulics Series – with Victor Chetta taking a great win to capture overall Series Silver. Chetta recovered superbly from taking top spot a week earlier in the West Cheshire TTCA 12 hour, with 248 miles in his legs to overcome for the North Shropshire Wheelers 25 at the opposite end of the distance scale and thus requiring a different type of effort. But Chetta staggered himself with an excellent ride of 53 minutes 17 seconds. He commented: “I was surprised with my performance so soon after the 12 hour time trial a week before. I was very pleased with the recovery of my legs! I thought it was going to be a fast day as it was already warm and humid before race with only light winds“.

But winning the event wasn’t the only thing Chetta took home as the 60 points gained did enough to settle the overall Silver medal for the Series, with Andy Tamplin taking Series Bronze after finishing the morning’s runner-up in 55:52 after pushing out Paramount’s Stuart Proctor by 15 seconds – and despite not being quite on top form. A nevertheless delighted Tamplin stated: “I didn’t feel as strong, but I was still pleased with my time – it would have been a personal best last year! I’m thrilled to bits with overall Bronze, as well as up to second place in the Veteran’s too despite not qualifying for the first three races before my (40th) birthday too! All that’s left is that elusive 50 PB“.

Tamplin’s Veteran’s comment regarded his overhauling of Tim Beardmore in a straight head-to-head for Silver and Bronze in that Series, with the destination of those medals having to be decided in the final round in a tussle that has gone down to the wire. Tamplin has gradually chipped away at Beardmore’s advantage in this competition and his 6th placed finish in this contest on the day with +10:08 was enough to see their positions flip after Beardmore placed 10th in +8:04.

Neither however could come close to the morning’s winner, Terry Icke, with the 72year-old Newport Shropshire CC rider putting in a superb effort of +17:04 to take the Veteran’s win, with his winning margin of 4:27 over Andy Hazell showing the strength of that victory. Icke commented: “I was pleased with my standard. I rode a 10 mile time trial the day before and did 20:59, so my legs felt a bit heavy. It was a good morning, perfect – it’s all about enjoying what we do and the people you meet“.

With the destination of Veteran’s Gold decided in the previous round, Jenny York doubled up on the prizes thanks to a win in the Ladies Series too. York stopped the watch on 1:03:09 which was enough to push Pauline Hughes into the runner-up spot both on the day and overall after another great season-long battle for the Ladies Series, with the Revolutions Racing rider crossing the line in 1:03:58. A delighted York was full of praise for her rival commenting: “I’ve really enjoyed the great close competition with Pauline this year and was pleased to get the overall win! It was a great event from the North’s, and I was pleased with another County 25 PB by 1:09! Can I just add that Pauline has had a fabulous year too with great times and Personal Bests and has pushed me hard. It’s been so close that it could have gone either way“. Hughes, who was pleased to win Silver added: “Congratulations to Jenny on Gold. It has been a great Ladies competition and I have enjoyed the camaraderie“.

But that wasn’t the end of the Ladies medals as the Bronze was settled too after Helen Tudor added 40 points to her tally thanks to a 1:08:09 effort. The SCCA Chair alluded to the many rearrangements required due to road works in 2016, stating: “I was surprised to get Bronze. The standard of competition has been really high this year. Thanks to all involved in putting on the races in what has been a difficult year“.

Two medals were also decided in the Junior Series too with Sam Morris finishing on a high with a personal best. Morris took Gold with his fine 59:05 ride, which was good enough for 9th place overall. By doing so Morris consigned Mid Shropshire Wheeler Devon Round to the Silver medal, with the destination of that Bronze and a myriad of other Championship medals open to several riders in the final round, The Coaching Revolutions Shropshire Championship 10 presented by Nova Raiders. Morris stated: “I was really pleased with my ride, especially to PB by 37 seconds. It was a great way to finish the series before the cyclo-cross season, thanks for everyone making the Series possible“. Round added: “I was happy to take Silver, congratulations to Sam for the win. Thanks everyone involved in the Series, a shame I couldn’t get to enough rounds this year“!
