An old course paid dividends for riders in the Nova Raiders Charity 25 with season’s bests set, Personal Bests broken – and the destination of two Championships resolved. With road works affecting the original Crudgington – Shawbirch – Tern Hill course the old Prees – Market Drayton course came into use to great effect, with Matt Davies blazing around the course in 51 minutes 57 seconds – not only his best County 25 of 2016 shaving 1:15 off his previous best, but earning him the maximum 60 points required to seal Gold in the Friction Hydraulics Championship.

A delighted Davies had a few issues with passing traffic as he started but soon overcame these, revealing: “I was chuffed to bits with the win, taking the Series and my time. I’m not sure if the wind and the traffic were a help or a hindrance, but either way it made for a quick day. I enjoyed the change in course although the longer run home from the Prees roundabout than usual was unpleasant. Thanks to all those involved in putting on and marshalling the race, great job Nova Raiders“.

That fabulous time pushed Victor Chetta into the runner-up spot despite an otherwise excellent 54:42, with the North Shropshire Wheeler seeing his lead in the County Best All Rounder Competition diminished to 55 seconds with two 25’s and a 50 left for Davies to improve further. Long-distance specialist Chetta however is a determined character and is sure to fight back strongly. He stated: “I pushed hard, but still not enough to get anywhere near Mr Davies – the event is about 75 miles too short for my liking! It seemed a fairly quick day yesterday with many SCCA riders under the hour, so a different version of the usual course was a pleasant change“!

Chetta is also in a dogfight for the Silver medal with Revolutions Racing rider Andy Tamplin snapping at his heels. These two riders are assured of a Championship medal after this event, but who gets what colour is yet to be decided. Tamplin set a personal best 55:12 to show how much he has improved in 2016 – and was pleased to see the old course back in use. He revealed: “I loved the old course and I had my previous Personal Best on it. It didn’t let me down as it was a new PB for me. The Nova marshals were amazing again all the way around. I Felt strong from start to finish, pushing all the way“.

But that wasn’t the only Championship settled with Jenny York not only taking the Veteran’s Series after finishing runner-up in that Championship on the day – she also took the Ladies win too. York set an excellent 1:04:18 overall which saw he ease ahead of Pauline Hughes in the Ladies Championship after the Revolutions Racing rider finished in second spot on 1:05:27. This Championship looks to be going down to the wire with just the minimum five point gap separating this pair. However it was the 55 points gained in the Veteran’s race for her +11:07 Standard that put York in an unassailable lead, making it the second time she has won this Championship. An ecstatic York stated: “What a day! A Fabulous Nova event, I felt really good and was pleased to get a 2nd County 25 Personal Best this year! I’m over the moon to get Veteran’s Gold again – a happy bunny“!

The only rider to beat York in the Veterans was Gary Duncan, who set an excellent Standard of +11:40. The Paramount CRT rider commented: “I was pleased with the result, it was nice to ride the original version of the D25/8. The Shropshire time trial scene has come on loads over past few years, well done to all clubs and riders“.

In the Juniors Championship Sam Morris extended his lead to 60 points and now only needs to ride one more event to ensure Junior Gold. Morris put in an excellent effort of 1:00:37, his best County 25 this year by 41 seconds, with his effort good enough for 13th overall in an event where 12 riders beat the hour.
