It was a last minute challenge that took victory in the Cyclotherapy Shropshire Championship 25 as SCCA Private Member George Evans snatched victory in the blue riband event of County time trialling – despite battling against the rain, wind and illness. Evans, off scratch man at the end of the field did enough to push out Victor Chetta, who had held the lead from early on to capture The Freestone Trophy and County 25 Gold with a superb effort of 52 minutes 7 seconds in Round 11 of the Friction Hydraulics Shropshire Championship Points Series. A delighted Evans revealed: “I was very pleased with the way I rode especially after being sick in the early hours of the morning. I was pleased with my time in such bad conditions“.

Held on the beautifully smooth Berriew – Four Crosses course, that surface guaranteed some superb times, evidenced by the first six riders home all beating the hour, which revealed it was likely to be a special evening. Chetta was amongst those numbers, taking the Silver medal after slicing a huge margin off his personal best with an excellent effort of 53:47 as he threw himself at the line in the pouring rain. Having started in fine conditions the Mid Shropshire Wheeler made the most of the course, commenting: “It was a personal best by over two minutes. A bit wet into headwind on the return leg, but still an enjoyable ride on a nice flat fast course“.

Chetta had the rider who finished in the Bronze medal position in his sights on the long straights that characterise this course – but that wasn’t the only medal that Bryn Davies went home with. Second rider back home, Davies put up an impressive effort of 55:40; also leading Hafren CC home for a famous first ever team victory thanks to back up from Ian Nisbett and Ian Coe in a combined 2:52:02 – as well as taking Veteran’s Bronze in +10:46. This impressive haul is reward for a superb season, with a delighted Davies commenting: “I was pleased with the result, and it was great to get the Team Gold, but there was a clear margin to the first two places – great rides by George and Victor“.

Davies’ sentiments were backed up by his team mates, with Nisbett claiming 8th spot in 57:31 adding: “I raced the club time trial the previous evening, so felt a bit sluggish for the first few miles on the 25. I was pleased with my time, especially considering the testing conditions on the return leg. Excellent result for Hafren CC taking the team gold – great rides by Bryn and Ian“. Coe meanwhile was 10th with another sub-hour ride of 58:51. He revealed: “Personally I was merely aiming to get inside the hour! I was very pleased at the pace I set. It wasn’t easy to judge with a strong wind taking us out and doing its best to prevent us from making it back. Absolutely thrilled to see Hafren, a relatively newly reformed club, making its mark. Many riders within the club, young and old, are raising the standards. Exciting times ahead“. Hafren took that Gold by 3:02 from a strong Mid Shropshire Wheelers team who maintain their lead at the head of the Top Club Award standings.

With Davies taking Veteran’s Bronze it was Gary Duncan who gained Gold +1:04 ahead of the Hafren rider in +11:50. The Paramount CRT rider claimed 5th spot overall on actual with 56:49 and was happy with his ride, stating: “I was pleased with my performance on a challenging night. A great course, a shame it’s not used more often“.

Duncan got the better of 2015 Veteran’s 25 winner Jenny York, who settled for Silver in this contest on +11:06. However she went one better in the Ladies Championship winning The Brian and Gill Morrison Trophy with an excellent effort of 1:04:19 – with a personal best. The Mid Shropshire Wheeler stated: “What a fantastic evening of racing! I thought the tough return leg would knock my time right down, so I was made up to achieve a win and a County Series 25 personal best“.

York wasn’t the only one to set a personal best as Revolutions Racing’s Pauline Hughes took Ladies’ Silver with a strong 1:05:33. Leading the Friction Hydraulic Series Ladies Championship, Hughes commented: “I was very pleased with a personal best, though it was tough on the return leg. Congratulations to Jenny with excellent winning time“.

Taking Ladies Bronze Ceris Eslava made it two medals for Paramount CRT with a fine effort of 1:06:30, finishing in the same position as in 2015. She said: “Great times by all on a tough night. Well done to the other ladies, and a big thanks to the organisers and helpers“.

In the Junior competition it was another Mid Shropshire Wheeler who took Gold as Kieran Morris put in a top ride of 1:02:44 to move up to third spot in the Friction Hydraulics Junior Championship – and revealed there was more in the tank. He commented: “I was pleased to get the Gold. A great course, though I was disappointed with the time as I was riding with a slight injury. Well done to everyone who rode and a huge thanks to the organisers“.
