An epic ride in the foulest of conditions saw one of Shropshire’s star riders smash the course record against the odds in the opening round of the SB Sports Injuries and Physiotherapy Series. Team Bottrill rider Josh Williams became the first rider to ever beat 20 minutes on the Waters Upton – Hodnet 10 mile course with a superb ride of 19 minutes 47 seconds; slicing through the wind, hail and rain that blighted the event with ease. Williams beat Andy Bason’s long-standing record of 20:19 set in 2011 to signal an ominous warning of his capabilities to the chasing pack. He commented: “I was happy with my ride! I didn’t expect to go under 20 minutes if I’m being honest, and to break the course record by a good chunk made the wet day that bit better“.

With a 56-strong field signing on in bright sunshine it was perhaps inevitable that conditions took a sudden turn for the worse just as the first riders were out on the course, leading to eight declining to start with the road taking on the appearance of a river. Despite four of those riders being immediately in line before Matt Garthwaite it meant he was destined for a lonely ride – but that didn’t stop him taking the overall runner-up spot and an early lead in the Series thanks to a fine effort of 22:13. He stated: “The time trial went to plan as I was having to leave something in the tank for racing the next day. Whilst the rain and the temperature didn’t make for pleasant riding conditions the wind seemed to be OK“.

Indeed, conditions for later riders seemed to favour later riders as the wind calmed, with Garthwaite making the most of that change to beat Mid Shropshire Wheelers’ Craig Ball, off in the middle of the field, by 14 seconds. Ball had further reason to celebrate after finishing as runner-up in the Veterans Championship too with a fine +3:51. He commented: “I was very pleased with the result. It was such horrible weather I just concentrated on working hard and tried to ignore conditions“.

The rider who beat Ball into second place in the Veterans was Paramount rider Gary Duncan, who had the advantage of being off a minute behind Ball and thus having him as a ‘carrot’. Duncan put in a great effort of +4:06 to take the early lead in the Veterans, stating: “It was probably the worst conditions I’ve ever raced in, so massive thanks to all the marshals and organisers for their time and effort“.

Despite the appalling conditions all eight ladies battled on through the rain, with Revolutions Racing rider Pauline Hughes setting out her stall early despite a tight contest with Paramount’s Ceris Eslava. Hughes set the benchmark of 26:33 to see off Eslava by a narrow six seconds, with reigning Ladies Champion Amanda Whitmore having a rare off day after suffering in the cold back in third spot on 27:20. Hughes commented: “I was delighted to win. The worst thing for me was visibilty with the spray and my visor steaming up. I was glad to get back to Ellerdine Village Hall for a hot cup of tea! Thanks to the lovely timekeepers and marshals who had to brave the weather“.

Taking an early lead in the Junior Series was Mid Shropshire Kieran Morris who put in a ride of 23:54, good enough to finish 11th overall.
